* If two merchants share the same card, the data can be read by
either merchant. That means my gym membership can be read by the
movie rental place.
* Not all magnetic readers are the same.
* This technology will be replaced soon by RFID chips embedded in the
card.
Bar code readers are probably more widespread than magnetic card
readers, and your data is not stored on the card for anyone to access.
But there are technical limitations to this as well.
