Subject: [entrepreneurs] Contractor question: Problem with single person in large client company.
Hey all,
I'd like to present this personal / work problem to the group and read
your entertaining responses.
I am a full-time contractor (freelance, not agency related) doing web
design for a few Fortune 500 companies. There is one client in
particular which gives me a lot of work.
Within their organization there is one person who I am forced to work
with on several projects. I take orders from him, but he is NOT my
direct superior. I am 2,000 miles from this client, by the way, so
communication is by phone and email.
* Constantly during a project he will give one directive - i.e.
"change the color to blue".
* After I have followed his instructions, he will email me back and
say "I TOLD YOU TO MAKE IT ORANGE - please read my instructions!"
* He will CC: everyone on this second message so the rest of the
company who are getting only the "second half" of the story think that
I am incompetent.
* Since he does this 5 or 6 times a week.
It is starting to affect not only my morale (as I am a perfectionist),
but also it is jeopardizing my relations with my superior (also his
superior) and future work with this company.
I'd prefer not to complain to the superior, as this has not helped in
the past and complaining generally makes things worse, anyway.
Any creative suggestions? Looking forward to your thoughts.
Take care,
... Christopher
