Start with a "show up fee" --> plumbers in our area charge $75 to just come out to your house, HVAC workers $65. There are "home inspector" books available (home inspection is another line of work your husband would do great at). The last ones I saw - can not remember the name of the web-site but they were from a store in Canoga Park, CA. They have a web-site but I do not have any recollection of the name of the store (I just remembered the city where the store was located because I lived there once - nearly 30 years ago). The home inspection books have detailed information on how to estimate construction jobs. There is also some construction estimating information at that same web-site.
Magnetic car signs --> Fed-Ex Kinkos. Bring your powerpoint or they will do it for you for extra.
I would get some shirts made up. Nothing too fancy --> you can make a decent iron on logo off any computer. Iron on the logos to decent dress shirts or golf shirts. Wear dress pants and make the circuit from realtor to realtor -> ask for any real estate investors looking for handymen. Also leave business cards with the realtors. You might get more work than you can handle. And if you have started the home inspection business - leave that information as well. Just keep in mind it would not be kosher to refer your own handyman service when you are the home inspector (in some states that is illegal).
We have a guy who has signs everywhere in our community (I have seen them else where as well), that says "We buy ugly houses," and then gives a 1-800 number. If you see any of those signs in your area - these guys are real estate investors and would more than likely need your family's handyman business help.
The lawn/yard & handyman service is really tailor made for real estate investors. Those that find a property - fix it up and flip it or those that rent it out. They would love to have someone or some business that would handle all their handy work - lawn cutting etc. Sort of a one-stop shop for the real estate investors.
I hope this helps, God Bless, Ed R.
