Tricia,
I have never hired a designer - my reasons - $$$$. You mentioned in one line on your web-site about "save money - do it right the first time." I would play that up big time about how you can actually save the homeowner money by A) having it look all tied together B) doing the renovation only once. Give some actual figures - solicit some folks who did not use a designer and had to redo everything because - they moved a wall and found out later that it was load bearing or they bought cheap cabinets and put granite counter tops on them and it looks like lip-stick on a pig. Perhaps a "don't let this happen to you" type of testimonial - complete with redo costs and before and after photos. What would work best here if the redo was you - find some folks who tried to do the DIY way and spent XXXX$ and when you came in and rescued their mess you spent XXX$ but if you would have been called in from the beginning - they would have only spent XX$ including your fees.
One other web-site enhancement would be a web-consult potential. Perhaps an additional income stream would be to allow folks to e-mail you a question or photos and get your opinion on tying everything together. You might be able to have a questionnaire for the customer to fill out with some dimensions and photos and maybe give them an idea over the internet. Just a thought - this maybe time consuming but then again I don't know of anyone else doing it. It allows you to work outside your local area (without business travel).
I would suggest a two-tiered pricing strategy here: one flat fee sort of a retainer fee for a lawyer and then two a per square-footage rate or a per day rate. For the retainer - they would have access to your blog - for questions and answer (maybe make it a monthly rate). They can submit photos - "does this chair work in the this room," etc. If they want you to design a room for them then the second rate would kick it. Anyway - just an idea to add extra income stream.
I hope this helps, God Bless, Ed R.
