There have been many great suggestions so far - here are the ones we use:
We buy stock right out of the local "Big Lots" store. We also buy "American Girl" merchandise close to Christmas because after a certain time period American Girl no longer guarantees Christmas deliveries. We do use some wholesale web-sites - some that were mentioned previously. There are some web-sites that I have since lost the address but you can bid on close-out merchandise. The problem with that for us is the bundles of merchandise tends to be whole truck loads or multiple pallets of various merchandise. But this is an excellent way to get a lot of merchandise on the cheap. Most of that close-out merchandise ends up at "Big Lots" stores.
You do have to experiment - my wife has developed an eye for under priced merchandise. As mentioned in some previous posts - what do you want to sell? It is easier to keep your product list small and develop a niche. At one time my wife cornered the market on a popular Hallmark DVD. She had standing orders at Amazon - so anytime any came in she got them all. Consequently she was able to command hefty margins on those DVDs. That is just one example of finding a niche. Others are collectibles, car parts for certain popular models, etc.
