Kerplump (that is the sound of my feet hitting the soap box).
Let us not forget to mention that we also now have a huge rise in grain prices not only due to increased production costs, but to the high use of grains in the gas alternative market.
While we are on the issue of government intervention, I would like to point out that the problem we have now is exactly why Reagan was not interested in listening to the environmentalists, esp. when it came to global warming. There can be some very good reasons to care for the environment, but it is often taken way too far and in the process puts American companies at a huge disadvantage in the global marketplace. There are many regulations and such that slows production and costs extra money. Companies can not compete with foreign companies that are not facing these same guidelines without cutting costs elsewhere...be it in size, quality, wages it pays workers, etc.
Definitely we would all be better off with a true free market system. It would regulate itself. Most folks can't understand this...they just think the government owes it to them to make things more "fair". etc.
It is killing the businessman.
The U.S. is shooting itself in the foot (and the leg and the thigh). I don't see an end in sight...most of this started many years ao and will not be taken care of without drastic measures (which won't happen no matter which party gets in) and some serious healing pains.
Now, back to our regularly scheduled program...
