Kurt's right. Most SEO companies get you a higher ranking with whats called long tail keywords. The best advice is to have a keyword rich website with fresh unique content. Try to have 3 to 5 long tail keywords per web page. While you yourself don't have to have a high PR, you'll need to have backlinks from sites with high PR. Go to some forums like Digital Point Forums and find webmasters in your niche who will write a review about your site.
Of course, all this is absolutely necessary for constant long term traffic. If you want a fast very inexpensive approach just go to my site - get instant traffic and back-links with social bookmarking submissions.

I've never used one of those companies.
It's easy to get listed at the top of a search engine - just pick a
search term that nobody ever uses! For example, if I search on my name
(kurt schweitzer) most of the first page of results (except for the
obituaries) are about me. Likewise for "Urban Village Scooters".
If you want to challenge a SEO firm, pick the most commonly searched
term in your field and challenge them to list you first for it.
