Virtual biz seeks to offer real solutions
San Antonio Business Journal - by Edmundo Conchas
Kathryn Whipple believes she has a knack for helping business owners clear their desks of time-consuming tasks.
Whipple is the proprietor of Done Virtually, a 3-year-old "virtual" executive assistant venture that she runs out of her home.
Essentially, Whipple handles whatever assignments her clients give her, including research, schedule coordination, dictation, transcription, documentation and correspondence.
"I can do it all," she says. "I can do things that are clerical in nature, but I am certainly not limited to that. My purpose it to take away as much as possible so they can focus on their business."
Whipple offers her services on an hourly basis at about $35 an hour, although she says there is also a discount for clients selecting her on a monthly retainer basis.

But she has managed to break into an obscure field by focusing her business on assisting just solo business owners, building trust with her clients and offering a flexible menu of services that takes her beyond the role of the typical secretary.
No office or payroll
Segawa, 63, doesn't need an office and isn't on a company payroll. She operates much like an independent contractor, providing remote administrative support from the Kaimuki home she shares with her husband, LeRoy.
The biggest struggle for this self-proclaimed introvert was promoting her administrative skills to a business set that at first was filled with skeptics.
She launched Judy Segawa, Virtual Assistant in 2002 not knowing if it indeed would take off. Her startup costs were relatively minimal: $5,000 for tuition costs for the virtual assistant training program, printing business cards and brochures, and buying a new computer and printer....
