Why a firework stand? It is that time of year, and there are always
ads in our local paper looking for someone to run one. I have heard
claims that you can, if you work hard enough, make enough money in that
one month to last a year. I doubt that - but it would be great!
The pitfalls of mlm... hmmmm... I have been thinking about that
because I am considering trying - again. First, here are the companies
that I have been associated with in no particular order: Shaklee,
Amway, AmeriPlan, Melaleuca, Fuller Brush, Stanley Home, Arbonne,
Sunrider, Watkins, Neways, Discovery Toys, Gourmet Coffee Club, Mia
Bella, Ideal Gifts and I am sure I missed one or two along the way.
Some of the companies wanted us to recruit by not telling which
business we were doing. I am uncomfortable with that. Some required
regular upgrades on your "show kit" that I ended up sinking my profits
right back into the display merchandise. Some have products that are
priced a bit too high for our area, and people are not interested.
Most people, in my experience are really NOT interested in going
outside their comfort zone and prefer to buy at Wal*art or other
familiar store, no matter how good the products. Party plans, where
people get together and look at merchandise, eat and socialize seem to
be going by the wayside, as no one has "time" to go to those things.
And some of them were bad timing on my part, lack of motivation, and
lack of follow through.
I did fairly well with Discovery Toys and Fuller Brush. AmeriPlan
started to take off then all the local dentists pulled out, and I lost
people because they wanted to stay in town to go the dentist. Our
Melaleuca group got big - but not under us.
I am considering Fuller Brush again, as the products and prices are
good. It isn't very exciting, though. I love Tupperware, and may do
that. I also love a company called Princess House, and no one has been
a distributor around here for quite a while. But, like the
other "party plan" businesses, they require an inventory of "show"
merchandise that can eat up your profit.
Basically, I have lost my faith in MY ability to do this business.
There are so many opportunities out there, but I have never seemed to
be able to find the fit between me and the people around me. Most
people don't want to be in business for themselves. They don't even
want to bother to fill out the paper work to get the product
wholesale. Which, to me is a no brainer. If you love something, why
not get it wholesale?? But, it is too difficult for many. Watkins has
come out with a really catchy plan, but I cannot even get people to
look past Vanilla! UGH!!
